For some, July means you’re a month closer to the next Samsung Galaxy Note III, whenever that’s popping out. Except that there are rumours placing the launch date exactly two days before the next big tech event: Berlin’s IFA 2013. This isn’t surprising information, given that Samsung’s been known to pre-empt tech shows to release their flagships.
Leaked images haven’t been consistent, so we can’t say that we have some idea of what it may look like. What we do suspect is that the images showing a thin bezel should be pretty close to what we’ll finally see. And information points to its RAM weighing in at 3 GB. The only conflicting news comes via a report that Samsung is capable of manufacturing 4 GB RAM chips, which wouldn’t totally surprise us either.
As expected, the device will feature a quad-core processor (of either the Qualcomm or Exynos variety), depending on where you live. Unexpected, however, was the news that Samsung will be producing four variants at different price points. The major differences will lie in screen quality: the top-end version will supposedly come with an ‘unbreakable’ AMOLED display while the cheapest version is rumoured to have a regular LCD one. Expect more rumours to surface over July and August.
In other news, a bunch of leaked images show off the coloured polycarbonate (read: plastic) shells of the rumoured budget iPhone. The images show brightly coloured options of red, yellow, white, blue and green. The grapevines seem to indicate the phones will be priced at USD 349, 449 and 549 for the 8GB, 16GB and 32GB variants respectively.
The back of the iPhone 5S has also surfaced in some leaked images and (surprise, surprise) it looks exactly the same as the iPhone 5. We’ve never expected major cosmetic changes, but we do expect a major overhaul in internals. The rumoured 12-megapixel camera is one change you can expect though.
There’s also a wild rumour that the phone will support fingerprint scanning to unlock and make NFC payments. While completely out there as a concept—despite the obvious security it would offer—the Micromax Canvas 4 did launch with a ‘blow to unlock’ feature, where you can blow into your phone’s microphone to unlock it. The less said about that, the better. But a fingerprint scanner? Just sounds too gimmicky for the good designers at Cupertino.
Release dates are unconfirmed for the iPhone 5S and Apple’s budget variant, but the iPhone 5 was announced in September 2012, and we expect something around that time.
